There have been anecdotal stories of psychotic disorders and bizaare nightmares possibly being attributable to Chantix when taken alongside the consumption of alcohol. Whilst this has not yet been proven, it might be a wise precaution to abstain from alcohol when taking Chantix. As smokers are most tempted to smoke whilst drinking, it can only be a good idea to abstain from alcohol, at least whilst taking Chantix.
It is not yet known whether or not it is safe to use Chantix alongside nicotine replacement products such as chewing gum and patches.
Contraindications
The effects of Chantix have not looked at in persons under 18 years of age. Therefore it should not be prescribed to those under 18.
What information should I give my health care provider?
Your healthcare provider needs to know:
- if you have problems with your kidneys or are on dialysis. It may be that you should be prescribed a lower dose.
- if you are pregnant. The effects of Chantix on the unborn child are not known. Ideally you should quit smoking before becoming pregnant.
- if you are breast feeding. Chantix may pass into breast milk and it might be better not to breastfeed if you are taking Chantix. You will need to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
- All drugs and preparations you are currently taking, whether they have been prescribed or bought over the counter. Chantix can affect the pharmokinetics of certain drugs and their dosage may need to be altered.
